Stories from CEF
Although Charles Haddon Spurgeon died 45 years prior to the birth of Child Evangelism Fellowship®, his sermons played an integral role in the life of our founder, Jesse Irvin Overholtzer. Overholtzer was reading one of Spurgeon’s sermons and came across a portion which said, “A child of five if properly instructed can as easily understand and believe the Gospel as an adult.”
More than ever in our increasingly secularized world, the authority and accuracy of the Bible are under attack. Even at the earliest ages, children are being taught ideas that contradict the Bible, such as evolution and millions of years of history.
Eighty years is a long time. Many organizations founded 8o years ago have strayed from their purpose and no longer embrace biblical values. By God’s grace, this will never be true of Child Evangelism Fellowship.
Good News Clubs are filled with exciting activities: games, snacks, missionary stories, Bible lessons, memory verse teachings, songs and more. But all of that aside, something more important happens in this after-school program: lives are changed.
Nine-year-old Rebecca of Guyana started her own Bible club at her elementary school. She came up with the program herself, even creating her own theme: Mighty Lord Is Our Savior. She gathered teaching materials, including Mailbox Club booklets, a Wonder Devotional Book and other activities that she created herself.
We can’t begin to understand the awesome power of God or the way He speaks to the heart of a child or an adult. But we know that His timing is perfect.
