Teach Kids the Value of All People

April 28th, 2025

How can we teach kids to value others? The Bible says much about the value of all people, avoiding prejudice, and loving others. We’re given the reason why in the very first chapter when Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created mankind in His own image…” Just by being human we’re all automatically made in God’s image—a living testament to the value of all people when the Creator of the universe is reflected in us!

Additionally, God tells us to respect, care for, and view each other like He does: with infinite love and patience. This is why teaching kids the value of all people can often involve also teaching forgiveness for kids or how to not take part in prejudice. Obstacles to seeing or loving others as God does might include:

  • Prejudice for their social or economic status
  • Looking down on their appearance
  • Disapproval of their behavior
  • Our own pride

Here’s how to teach kids about loving others, avoiding prejudice, and the value of all people.

The Value of All People is in God’s Image, Not the World’s

It’s important to help kids understand that not only do all people have value, but that the value of all people is equal. In James chapter 2, believers are warned not to look down on other people, or to show favoritism based on wealth or social status. Kids might feel others are not socially acceptable because of their clothing, hygiene, or looks. Frequently remind kids that those things are superficial, and we need to constantly fight the media message that wealth or beauty gives a person more value.

The value of all people comes from their inherent worth as God’s children and creation, not from anything they do, look like, or achieve. We should learn to see people as reflections of God’s image and through His lens, not the world’s. Use these conversations as teaching moments to build in your kids the habit of looking past outward statuses to see people as God sees them.

Teach Forgiveness for Kids, Loving Others When it’s Hard

Do your kids know how to recognize the value of all people and practice loving others, even when those people act wrongly? Sinful behavior is often related to how kids view themselves, and whether they’ve received God’s love and forgiveness. We don’t want our children to approve of bad behavior, but we also want them to see that they can still value and love those who don’t live in accordance with God’s law. After all, God loves us despite our many faults and failings.

Help teach forgiveness for kids, sitting down with them to brainstorm practical ways to love difficult people, including replies that are soft answers like “Are you having a bad day? Is there anything I can do to help?” Help kids see that while valuing and loving others might be challenging at times, we can do it when we’re grateful for how God values us, too, in spite of our own unlovable ways. Help them to pray often for a heart that feels compassion, instead of anger—encouraging a love of forgiveness for kids and a heart that sees the value of all people.

Reject Pride or Prejudice

Another big reason we’re tempted to stop loving others and forget the value of all people is because of our own personal pride. God tells us in Philippians 2:3 to consider others as more significant than ourselves and to do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit. To help your kids combat prejudice or feeling superior to others, point to the creativity of God as the source of value for all people. He is the wonderful Creator who made each person unique—including their personality and talents. Remind kids that their talents are gifts from God, and encourage them to praise God for the different gifts they see in others as well.

Good News Clubs® Help Kids Feel Valued

By learning to recognize the value of all people and loving others, our families can have the privilege of watching God draw people into His Kingdom when we see people like He does. That’s exactly what happened for this Good News Club® teacher who had a financially disadvantaged, unruly child in her after-school club. Recognizing the value of all people, by practicing loving others as God would and looking past the initial annoyances of a challenging child, this boy was finally able to understand his value because the Good News Club® teacher explained she wasn’t paid to be there—she genuinely cared and wanted to be there to tell of God’s love for him. In time, the boy’s mother would also learn of her value to God because of the teacher’s commitment to loving others.
